Position Description

About us

At Barringer Construction, we build more than spaces - we build relationships, careers, and experiences that leave a mint on the pillow. As a Carolinas-based commercial general contractor with offices in Asheville, Charlotte, Greenville, and Raleigh, we bring craftsmanship and care to every corner of NC, SC, and wherever our clients take us. We're 100% employee-owned through our ESOP, which means every teammate shares in what we build together - and we were named Business NC Magazine's #1 Best Employer in North Carolina in both 2024 and 2025.

We're looking for a Project Engineer who's ready to learn fast, think ahead, and help our project teams deliver exceptional work. You'll be right in the middle of the action, supporting Project Managers through every phase of construction and gaining the kind of hands-on experience that shapes a real career.

What You'll Do

As a Project Engineer, you'll work alongside our Project Managers, Superintendents, and field teams to keep commercial construction projects moving smoothly from preconstruction through closeout. This is a launch-pad role - you'll learn the business from the inside out while making a real, daily impact on how we deliver for our clients.

  1. Support Project Managers with on-site and off-site coordination to drive successful project delivery.
  2. Manage RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and procurement logs with accuracy and attention to detail.
  3. Maintain project documentation and help keep schedules, budgets, and communication on track.
  4. Partner with Superintendents and subcontractors to address questions and resolve issues quickly.
  5. Review project plans and specifications to build your understanding of scope and constructability.
  6. Help prepare meeting agendas, capture notes, and follow up on action items to keep teams aligned.
  7. Track deadlines and deliverables so nothing falls through the cracks.
  8. Build strong relationships with clients, trade partners, designers, and teammates - the Barringer Way.
Position Requirements

What You Bring

  1. A proactive, team-first mindset and a genuine eagerness to learn the craft of construction.
  2. Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple priorities without losing the thread.
  3. Clear written and verbal communication - you listen well and follow through.
  4. Sharp problem-solving instincts and a willingness to ask good questions.
  5. Professionalism and poise in client-facing settings.

Experience

  1. Baseline understanding of commercial construction project management workflows.
  2. Prior internship, co-op, or entry-level experience with a commercial general contractor is a plus.

Education

  1. Associate or bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field - or equivalent hands-on experience in commercial construction.

Skills & Tools

  1. Familiarity with Procore, or a strong aptitude to learn it quickly.
  2. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  3. Comfort reading and interpreting construction plans, specifications, and schedules.
  4. Bluebeam experience is a plus.

Physical Demands

  1. Ability to move around active construction sites, including climbing stairs and ladders.
  2. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
  3. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation between job sites and the office.

Work Environment

  1. Time is split between office and active construction sites with varying conditions — indoor and outdoor, temperature swings, dust, noise, and occasional heights.
  2. Standard weekday schedule with occasional early mornings or extended hours as project needs require.
